California, sometimes referred to as ‘The Golden State’, is the 31st American state. First settled by the Spanish in 1769, it was considered as part of Mexico until 1846. It was independent for a short time as the California Republic, until it was annexed into the United States in 1850.
It is the most populous and ethnically diverse state in America. It is also home to many popular cities and tourist destinations, such as Hollywood in Los Angeles, or San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, San Jose, Sacramento, and San Diego.
The state is popular for its pleasant weather, expansive forests and deserts, and also for its celebrity and beach lifestyle popularized by television and movies. California has a massive economy, which is larger than most countries, led foremost by agriculture, Aerospace development, television and movie entertainment, and technological and computer development.
California’s eco system is one of the most rich and distinct on the planet. Especially famous for its flora, it is home to the world’s tallest trees, the California Redwoods. Also found in the state are the world’s oldest trees, and the overall largest trees. Some popular ecologic areas include Yosemite National park, Lake Tahoe, the Mojave Desert, Death Valley and the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
